During his childhood, Downey had the opportunity to work on minor roles in his father's productions. He made his acting debut at a very young age of five years by playing the role of a sick puppy, in the absurdist comedy Pound. Initially, as a struggling actor, Downey began working on theatric roles. He played a role in, short-lived off-Broadway musical American Passion at the Joyce Theater in 1983, which was produced by Norman Lear. His success was the outcome of his immense hard work. When Downey was selected as Charlie Chaplin for the movie, "Chaplin", he prepared extensively, learning how to play the violin as well as tennis left-handed.
